A £34 million design and construct contract to refurbish the Brynglas Tunnels in Newport, South Wales is being supported by Regent Samsic cleaning operations.
The 370m long, twin two-lane tunnels carry the M4 motorway under Brynglas Hill and are the first and only bored tunnels on the British motorway network.
The refurbishment work within the tunnel bores involves re-constructing the carriageways, replacing dado panels and upgrading drainage, mechanical and electrical systems – including associated life-safety engineering systems. The Usk River Bridge to the east and Malpas Viaduct to the west of the tunnels are also being refurbished and waterproofed.
Costain has awarded the contract to clean personnel support facilities, including temporary offices, stores and toilets, to Regent Samsic’s western region operations.
Says Regent Samsic regional manager, Shane Howell:
“Our teams are operating 24-hours, 7-days a week at Brynglas to ensure that these areas are kept clean and tidy for each shift.
“Given the nature of the work being undertaken, clean work/rest environments play an even more important role in keeping users comfortable, safe and motivated.”
The Brynglas Tunnels refurbishment project is scheduled for completion in March 2018.
